Bridgwater Arts Centre proudly present, the one and only Fairport Convention.
Not just a band, they are an English institution.
Formed in London in 1967, they have been consistently making great music for 52 years, having released their debut album, the eponymously titled “Fairport Convention” the following year. The originators of British folk-rock, their personnel has included several seminal musicians and songwriters that reads like a who’s who of the very best of British folk music. Richard Thompson, the late, lamented Sandy Denny and Dave Swarbrick have all passed through the band’s ranks at some point or another.
The existing line-up features Simon Nicol on guitar and vocals, the only original band member left, Dave Pegg on bass guitar, whose career started back in Birmingham in the mid-60’s and who joined the band in 1970, the comparative “newby” Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin and vocals, now 21 years into his Fairport career, violinist and “stand-up comedian” Ric Sanders and the wonderful Gerry Conway on drums and percussion.
Fairport Convention has attracted considerable critical acclaim: the band has won a coveted BBC Lifetime Achievement Award; Radio 2 listeners voted Fairport’s exceptional album “Liege & Lief” ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’; and their story has been celebrated with a major documentary on BBC Four television. They are also responsible for the hugely popular Annual Cropredy Festival.
It is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome Fairport to our venue. Whether you are a long-time fan or a newcomer to their music, an evening with Fairport Convention is not to be missed and for those who witnessed their performance at the Town Hall last year, you know what you are in for!
“Impressive musicians with a great back catalogue… (they) take chances and clearly enjoy themselves.” The Guardian
