Introducing “Piano Man – The Music of Billy Joel”

A journey through the works of one of the most successful songwriters of all time, stunningly recreated by a live band.  New show for 2017….

“Jules does a great job. the band sounds great and it’s rare to see a drummer who actually plays the right drum part to “Just the way you are” …Thank you for celebrating the music I helped create.”Liberty Devitto, original drummer for Billy Joel.

“Sublime songs superbly played – what’s not to like?” – Evesham Arts Centre

“An Innocent Man, Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), Uptown Girl, Only The Good Die Young – all hits for the Piano Man himself, Billy Joel. But at the packed Hall tonight, the Piano Man was Worcester-based Jules Benjamin, who accurately showcased highlights of Joel’s incredible career, with the cream of the Midlands’ musicians joining him. Two solid hours of hits from Joel…Jules certainly gave the audience what they had come for, and his powerful voice perfectly suited the acoustics of the venue. A great night out for fans of Billy Joel’s music and good music in general”. Review by Choice Radio

“After seeing Mr Joel on 3 tours and being an avid fan since 1976 I needed convincing but New York State of mind was exceptional , congratulations.” – audience, The Rose Theatre Kidderminster

Jules Benjamin is one of the Midlands’ most accomplished performers and songwriters. He has travelled the world, played for royalty, made numerous appearances on domestic and foreign TV, and has shared the stage with or supported the likes of Olly Murs, Status Quo, Glen Tilbrook and Danny Williams to name but a few. He has also released 11 albums of his own songs to date.

Jules is a member of the New Amen Corner, currently the hottest band on the 60’s circuit because of their ability to recreate so perfectly the sound and atmosphere of that era.  A  feature of regular nationwide 60’s tours (eg “Solid Silver 60’s”), they work with artists  such as Chris Farlowe, PP Arnold, Billy J Kramer, and a host of other international 60’s bands.

Jules’ repertoire also includes years in one of the region’s top tribute bands (The Beatless), and a peerless record of entertaining crowds at local and national music festivals with his own and others’ music of many varieties.  An experienced and warmly entertaining performer.

Having shared a stage with Billy Joel’s original drummer Liberty Devitto, Jules came up with the show which he has put together with some of the Midlands’ most experienced musicians.  Joel’s music is lovingly recreated as close to the original as possible – this is a show which pays deep respect to the songs as they were originally written and performed, right down to industrial percussion and vocal gymnastics!

Jules is of course a huge Billy Joel fan, and tells of a fantastic coincidence which led him to play the superstar’s own piano completely by accident in the New York branch of Macy’s department store.  A portent of things to come, perhaps.  The show has been admired and enjoyed by Midlands musicians and music fans alike, and having started out in Jules’ home town of Worcester is now preparing to tour in theatres nationwide.

The band consists of top -notch Midlands musicians. Keith Baker (drums) has an impressive musical pedigree, having been the original drummer in Supertramp as well as playing in Uriah Heep and Bakerloo (with Clem Clempson).  Steve Handley (bass, bv) was a member of jazz/rock outfit Summit Conference and European No.1selling band Atlantic Freeway, and has toured Europe with the Tribute to Rod Stewart show.  Carolyn Evans (saxes, bv, percussion, keys) has appeared at Ronnie Scott’s & Birmingham International Jazz Festival (in funk band Juiced), been nominated for a British Blues award (in the Big Blues Tribe), and was a member of Midlands soul heavyweights ‘36 Stone’.  Paul Hart (guitars, bv) has been a mainstay of the Midlands music scene, including covers supremos Come Together.  He’s also lent his talents to TV session work including BBCs Top Gear amongst others.
